The behavioral focus of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) emphasizes modifying specific behaviors in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using principles of behaviorism to teach skills and reduce problematic behaviors through positive reinforcement and sometimes negative consequences.

This approach has faced criticism for potentially overlooking the internal experiences and emotional needs of individuals, focusing excessively on outward compliance rather than holistic development.

Critics argue that such a focus on behavior modification might suppress a person's true identity and emotions, without addressing underlying sensory sensitivities or cognitive differences, leading to calls for more empathetic and understanding-based therapeutic approaches within the autism community.

NOTE:  I do not agree with this criticism of ABA, I just report it. This one is confusing it is a "behavioral" approach. So yes. You got me. It focuses on behavior.
