While I generally recommend steering clear of diagnosing your child via Dr. Google, it seems my advice often falls on deaf ears. Parents, armed with Wi-Fi, often turn themselves into overnight neuroscientists, frantically scrolling through a sea of symptoms that could mean anything from a bad day to an alien abduction.
However, it's crucial to keep an eagle eye on your child's behaviors and developmental milestones. While I can't list every warning sign for all disorders, I can spotlight a few telltale signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) you shouldn't ignore.
Let's talk red flags for ASD, which mostly revolve around social skills—or the lack thereof—that most kids pick up just by hanging around others. If your little one isn't making eye contact, seems uninterested in playing with peers, or doesn't respond when you repeatedly yell their name at the park (we’ve all been there), it might be time to take note. A sudden drop-off in their chit-chat abilities is also a biggie.
Don’t brush these off as just "kids being kids." These could be crucial clues that your child might need a bit of extra help. Bring up these behaviors with your pediatrician, especially during those critical check-ups around the 18-to-24-month marks. It could make a world of difference.
Understanding and acting on what you observe in your child's development is key. Every child's path is unique, and connecting with healthcare professionals about your observations can help tailor the support your child needs. After all, it takes a village—preferably one that doesn’t jump to conclusions based on a web search!
