Stereotypy refers to repetitive or ritualistic movements, postures, or utterances. These behaviors are often seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but can also occur in other developmental disorders or in typically developing individuals under certain conditions.

Common examples include hand-flapping, rocking, spinning, or repeating sounds or words. In the context of ASD, these behaviors are usually self-stimulating and serve specific functions for the individual, such as reducing sensory overload or providing a sense of comfort or control.
